I’m retiring soon

Subject:

When you retire, a lot can change. In terms of your daily life, but also in terms of your wallet. Read more about retirement here.

Organising your financials

Most residents are entitled to AOW. This is a basic state government pension. You must apply for AOW yourself with the Sociale Verzekeringsbank (SVB). About four months before your state pension age, you will receive a message from the SVB. Are you currently in employment or have you been employed in the past? In this case, you are likely also eligible for a pension from your employer.

On a lower income? Make sure you are aware of your entitlements!

When you retire, your income may be lower. Especially if you have accumulated little or no pension. Perhaps you can supplement your pension. There are schemes for this purpose, such as:

AIO: an income supplement for elderly people who do not receive AOW or do not receive full AOW. For example, if you came to live in the Netherlands after your AOW age.

Ouderenkorting: a tax benefit for the elderly.

Municipal tax waiver: if you have a lower income, you may have to pay less or no council tax.

Rent and healthcare allowance: when you retire, your entitlement to allowances may change. For example, you may become eligible. Or you may receive a higher amount than before.

The free Dordt Pass: this pass allows you to travel for free on public bus transport outside rush hour, among others. You’ll also get a free annual pass for the AanZet Library.

A quick overview

Please visit this page to see a quick overview of the various schemes. Here you will also find a link to an online ‘pot check’. Here you can directly see which allowances and schemes you may be entitled to. You can then also directly apply for them.

Other considerations

Retirement can also raise other questions. For example, about staying active, housing and general health. All are important matters to consider. To help you get started, we have made a list of considerations. Please visit this page.
